1. IT’S A CONSERVATION AREA

Two miles southwest of the city centre lies the area of Whalley Range. It’s one of the city’s earliest suburbs, which has been declared as a conservation area thanks to its wide, tree-lined streets and large, redbrick villas. It’s home to the stunning Gothic Revival building, formerly GMB College, which is now the British Muslim Heritage Centre.

Bordered by Upper Chorlton Road, the area has been made famous by lyrics from popular Manchester band, The Smiths: ‘What do we get for our trouble and pain but a rented room in Whalley Range’.

2. GREAT OUTDOOR SPACES TO ENJOY

Whalley Range is home to Alexandra Park, which has undergone a multi-million pound

refurbishment in the past few years. The park sits just on the edge of Whalley Range and offers locals large, green meadows to enjoy.

It’s not just a place that’s great for walking the dog though, there’s picnic spots for summertime, tennis courts to keep active, a cricket oval and a cafe for a quick pick-me-up.

3. TOP SPOTS TO DINE OUT

There are plenty of places to enjoy a meal out or a drink or two, including Tibetan Kitchen at the bottom of Upper Chorlton Road. It serves up authentic Tibetan food inspired by the owner’s own travels to the Himalayas.

One of the top bar spots in the area is Hillary Step. Brilliant on a sunny day due to its ideally-placed beer garden, it stocks locally-brewed beer which is thoroughly enjoyed by residents.

4. REASONABLE PRICES AND PLENTY OF OPTIONS

Whalley Range is a favoured area for renters and first-time buyers, as houses tend to be much more affordable than the neighbouring Chorlton, but still just a short walk away with the same great transport links.

The majority of houses sold in the past year were flats which sold on average for £171,755. Semi-detached properties are also very popular and sell for an average of £401,158, and terraced homes average at around £294,254.

Properties here average at £273,257 and are slightly more expensive than nearby Old Trafford but cheaper than Chorlton-cum- Hardy.
